Child abuse
is a traumatic and devastating experience for both children and their
families. Victims are often confused and
blame themselves. The Children’s Justice Center (CJC) is a home-like,
child-friendly facility where children receive coordinated services during
the child abuse investigative process by decreasing secondary trauma
that may be caused by the criminal justice and child protection systems.
The CJC is a Salt Lake County government program administered by the
Division of Youth Services within the Department of Human Services. (Please
see our Links page for more information
regarding additional programs provided by Salt Lake County Government.)
What we do
| |
 |
The Salt Lake County Children’s Justice Center
is an exceptional program, contributing major advancements in the field
of child abuse investigations. The program serves 3,700 people annually
and provides critical assistance with investigations involving sexual abuse,
physical abuse, child homicide, domestic violence related child abuse,
abductions, and shaken baby syndrome. The centers are located in neighborhood
settings, decorated like “grandma’s house” and designed
to help children feel safe and comfortable during the interview process.
Children visit the center for about one hour while investigators from law
enforcement and child protective services meet with the child and their
parents to obtain statements and provide support. Crisis intervention,
advocacy, and referral services are provided to help the family cope with
the aftermath of abuse. Through the coordination services of the Children’s
Justice Center, involved agencies work together to promote the “best
interests of the child” in prosecution and protection proceedings.
